NoTanx Comp '08

A great day was had by all…..

18 Competitiors signed up for the NoTanx Deep Comp 2008 and we were working well to prepare the top times and organise the safety….
We were actually ahead of schedule.

 

Well, we WERE ahead until we left on the Friday 1.5hours late, hit traffic coming out of London, hit traffic through Bath, missed the closing time of Vobster Quay and finally broke down in the drive of a deserted B&B 10minutes away from The dive site ….

 

No matter, On Saturday morning Antonio ferryed us and gear from the B&B to the dive site we were only ½ hour behind schedule…. Not bad, all things considered.

 

Only 5 people had diving in a comp before so it was an eager group of divers who faced me during the briefing. A couple of guys hadn’t used a Lanyard before and everyone was concerned by “The Blackness” at 27m.

 

 

 

Inscriptions over, and all Tag Velcro and Passes distributed, we moved to The Lilly Pad.

Freya (Aged 4¾) was the designated MC, Mary had turned up to watch (but got roped into Timekeeping... Cheers Mary) and Alex was filming. We moved sedately to The Lilly Pad by boat.

 

The Tags were set and Sam prepared (briefly) for his dive, which also was the plate check dive…. 1½ Mins later… “Oh man that’s black down there!” Technically I should have given him a Red Card for surface protocol…  apparently “The Blackness” was at 28m today. I went down to check the 2^nd Rope… And again my exasperation should have disqualified me from the Comp. We were ready for the “proper competitors”

Phew! a crazy 2 hours of pulling ropes, coaching safetying had paid off everyone was having a great time. Lunch was required.

 

 

 

Sue was designated vote taker (NoTanx Comps are a bit different from normal Freediving comps. Everyone involved votes for who they think had the best dive… they can choose any criteria; style, depth, personal achievement etc. But most people go for “Smile Factor”) It must be noted that most people had to be persuaded into Voting with Chocolate cookies (Thanx Sue)

 

The prize presentation was after Lunch and everyone sat expectantly….

1^st Prize was an Immersion Prowler Freediving Computer, 2^nd Prize was a NoTanx Swimsuit, and 3^rd Prize was NoTanx Merch
